Eglin AFB, FLPosition Duties And Responsibilities

• Provide all management, personnel and transportation necessary to perform as a Pharmacy Tech in a manner that shall cover the range of services provided in a civilian MTF and set forth by the 96 MDG.
• Shall greet and receive patients, prepare and maintain records, pull and file patient prescriptions, perform basic secretarial skills, handle telephone calls and written correspondence.
• Serve as a liaison between physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other medical staff to Pharmacy personnel.
• Shall perform information consultation duties including supporting new and refill prescriptions, supporting patient requests, supporting physician requests, monitoring for drug interactions, and reporting adverse drug reactions.
• Shall receive patients in a courteous and professional manner.
• Performs pharmaceutical dispensing duties including filling new outpatient prescriptions, refilling prescriptions, entering orders into databases, processing Inpatient orders.
• The Pharmacy Technician has knowledge of interpersonal relationships and the ability to maintain composure and react appropriately while reacting to patients and families; to manage distraught, irritable, unreasonable or angry individuals and to maintain positive rapport with all individuals involved in patient care.
• Have the ability to acquire and use basic computer skills to review, enter, and update patient data, and extract patient information using the Military Health System Genesis (MHSG), Preventive Health Assessment Individual Medical Record (PIMRPyxis, Innovation’s PharmASSIST/Nexia, GSL Solutions, Parata Systems, QFlow Systems, Patient Safety Reporting Tool, and Electronic Health Records Systems (ESSENTRIS).
• Provide patient care services as directed by pharmacists, physicians/nurse practitioners/physician assistants or other individuals responsible for patient care.
• Maintain patient confidentiality when reviewing patient prescriptions while displaying safety awareness. The Pharmacy Technician shall not recommend patients consult a specific practitioner or specific practice and must attend and participate in clinic staff meetings and professional activities as directed.
• The Pharmacy Technician’s actual clinical activity shall be a function of the DHA’s clinical privileging process and the overall demand for primary care. The Pharmacy Technician shall adhere to the policies/standards of the Air Force Medical Service in meeting or exceeding established Air Force standards for access, Preventive Health Assessment Individual Medical Record (PIMR) and Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall be required to consult with other Pharmacy Technicians or Pharmacists for continuation of care. The Pharmacy Technician shall practice within the guidelines set by the credentialing office of the MTF and the Medical Director.
• The Pharmacy Technician productivity shall be comparable to that of other comparable positions assigned to the same position and authorized the same scope of care.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall treat patient lists, no matter how developed, as privileged information.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall adhere to strict rules and regulations on all controlled substances. Inventory and maintain required stock records for controlled drugs. Provide on-the-job training for newly assigned pharmacy personnel and trainees on all local policies and procedures for medication dispensing, as necessary.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall remove expired or damaged stock from shelves and follow established procedures for their proper disposition. Select storage areas for items based upon conditions (e.g., refrigerated, dry, etc.) required for proper maintenance of all pharmaceuticals and security of controlled substances. Rotate shelved stock to ensure proper issuance according to dates received or established guidelines. Perform routine housekeeping duties to keep work area and equipment in clean and optimal condition.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall respect and maintain the basic rights of patients, demonstrating concern for personal dignity and human relationships. HCW’s receiving complaints validated by the Functional Requirements Evaluator Designee (FRED) and Chief of the Medical Staff shall be subject to counseling and, depending on the nature and severity of the complaint, separation from performing services under this contract.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall coordinate and participates in designated facility meetings.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall consult with medical personnel, legal authorities, and department heads as required.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall follow applicable local facility/AF/DHA/DoD instructions, policies and guidelines.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall maintain a level of productivity and quality consistent with: complexity of the assignment; facility policies and guidelines; established principles, ethics and standards of practice of professional social work, Health Services Inspection (HSI), The Joint Commission (TJC) and other applicable DoD and service specific guidance and policies. Must also comply with the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Program, infection control and safety policies and procedures.
• The Pharmacy Technician shall complete all required electronic medical record training, facility-specific orientation and training programs, and any AF/DHA/DoD mandated training.
• Prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established MTF standards, to include, but not limited to: timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Contractor employees shall only use MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations for documentation in the patient health records and follow the MTF’s Do Not Use Abbreviation List. (AFI 44-172 / AFI 48-123, Medical Examinations and Standards)
• Shall perform administrative duties that may include maintaining statistical records of his or her clinical workload, participating in medical educations programs, and participating in quality improvement functions and other duties as prescribed by Department Head. Generate third-party billing in print and electronic formats and reconcile weekly.
• Shall attend and participate in meetings, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to the following: quality improvement meetings, professional staff meetings, department head’s staff meetings, flight meetings, and other meetings required by applicable regulations, MTF guidance, or as directed by the Department Head or his/her designated representative.
• Shall treat patient information, no matter how developed, as privileged information. Patient information shall not be disclosed or revealed in any way for any use outside the MTF without prior written permission by the Chief of Hospital Services.
• Shall respect and maintain the basic rights of patients, demonstrating concern for personal dignity and human relationships. Providers receiving complaints validated by the FRED, COR and Chief of the Medical Staff shall be subject to counseling and, depending on the nature and severity of the complaint, separation from performing services under this contract.
• Shall maintain open and professional communication with members of the MTF staff, MTF customers, and other contractor employees. COR shall report valid complaints in writing to the CO for action. Valid complaints shall be considered a performance failure. The contractor shall resolve all substantiated complaints immediately upon notification of the complaint, and no later than the suspense date provided by the CO, or designated representative.
• Shall seek and maintain interpersonal relationships with clients/families and coworkers which contribute to mission accomplishment.
• Shall possess basic knowledge of various training methods and interpersonal skills in order to develop a rapport with the patients and co-workers during which instructional and education information is presented and a supportive, trusting relationship is established.
• Knowledge of an extensive body of pharmaceutical and pharmacy procedures and techniques sufficient to prepare prescriptions for dispensing by the pharmacist including all aspects of prescriptions preparation and to complete various complex technical functions in the pharmacy. Understanding of 3rd party insurances and follow-through of insurance-related issues and reconciling insurance discrepancies.
• Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures, and operation and care of pharmacy equipment.
• Knowledge and familiarity with a wide range of articles stocked in the pharmacy sufficient to answer inquiries from doctors, nurses, patients and other staff on the availability of specific items, e.g., drugs in stock, new drugs on order, and dosage forms available in the pharmacy.
• Knowledge of rigid aseptic techniques in the preparation and handling of sterile solutions.
• Skill in the operation and care of a variety of pharmacy equipment, e.g., tablet and capsule counting machines, automatic liquid bottling machine, tube filling and crimping machines, sterilizing equipment, labeling machine, filtering devices, etc.
• Ability to follow master formulas used in the compounding of bulk mixture to identify and correct atypical results.
• Ability to inventory, requisition, store, and dispose of pharmaceuticals and adjunct supplies.
• Ability to interpret prescriptions and formulas to prepare prescriptions dispensing by the
• Knowledge of medical privacy and confidentiality (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act [HIPAA]), and accreditation standards of Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and The Joint Commission (TJC).
• Working knowledge of computer applications/software to include Microsoft Office programs, MS Outlook (e-mail), and internet familiarity is required. The ability to input, extract and format data from established databases is desired.

Minimum Qualifications

• Be a graduate of a Pharmacy Technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) or successful completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program (i.e., a technical, hospital or retail-based program) or a formal medical services training program of the United States Military, or a minimum of 500 documented pharmacy technician working hours in conjunction with a national certification.
• Shall hold current American Heart Association or the American Red Cross Healthcare Provider (HCP) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Shall have at least 12 months of experience within the last 24 months. This experience shall have been in an inpatient/outpatient pharmacy setting.
• Must be registered with the Board of Pharmacy and must be certified by either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
• Must be a US Citizen.
