On this day in 1967, the Six-Day War between Israel and a coalition of Arab states. In response to a buildup of Arab forces along its borders, Israel launched a preemptive attack, primarily against Egypt. After six days of fighting, Israel occupied the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, and the West Bank and Arab sector of Jerusalem. Peace talks would eventually prevail but would take decades to do so.
