Duke Football will face off against multiple Top 25 ranked teams during the 2024 season
Adam Rowe
Duke Football won't be facing off against the kind of schedule they saw last year, but they're still going to have their work cut out for them throughout a difficult in-conference schedule as they lose some of their Coastal Division foes and take on an ACC slate that became one biggroup this past year. The backend of the schedule is the most loaded, with three teams that received votes in the preseason poll awaiting the Blue Devil, but they also go on the road to take on three of their first six opponents.
From Week Eight against Florida State at home all the way through Week Thirteen, Duke will take on five programs that earned preseason Top 25 votes from the Associated Press. While there are two bye weeks situated perfectly inside that run, those six weeks will be the test of just how successful the Manny Diaz Era begins in Durham.
Here's what to expect as Duke hits the field this Fall, beginning with a home game against Elon on August 30th (just 17 days away!).
Week One - Elon - 8/30 (Friday night) - Home
Elon, the lone FCS opponent on Duke's schedule for 2024, obviously didn't receive any votes for the preseason Top 25, but they did receive 16 votes in the FCS Preseason Coaches Poll. The Blue Devils are projected to beat the visiting Phoenix by 23.5 points, the first game of the Manny Diaz era.
Week Two - Northwestern - 9/6 (Friday night) - Away
Duke and Northwestern have traditionally been rivals on the football field and the recruiting trail, but in recent years the Blue Devils have flexed their muscles in both avenues. Going back to the 2017 season, Duke has won five straight games over the Wildcats. In the second week of the 2024 season, the Blue Devils will travel to Evanston, Ill to take on NW in a temporary stadium along theshores ofLake Michigan.
Week Three - UConn - 9/14 (Saturday night)
For the second consecutive year, Duke will face off against Jim Mora, Jr.'s Connecticut Huskies. The Blue Devils went on the road last year and came away with a 41-7 win, and will host UConn in the third week of the season on Saturday night.
Week Four - Middle Tennessee - 9/21 (Saturday night) - Away
Duke heads out to face off against Middle Tennessee in the fourth week of the season, which should be a sneaky matchup as theBlue Raiders hired Derek Mason this past offseason to revitalize the program. With a looming matchup against rival North Carolina the following weekend, Manny Diaz will need to make sure his team is focused on the task at hand in the final nonconference matchup of the year.
Week Five - North Carolina - 9/28 (Saturday) - Home
North Carolina has been ranked in the preseason Top 25 three of the past four years, but didn't receive a single vote this year. As Mack Brown nears the end of his second tenure as Tar Heels' Head Coach, he'll have to work in a new quarterback along with a new Defensive Coordinator. While it's not one of the first four weeks, it's early for Duke to be taking on their rivals, which could give them an opportunity to get back the Victory Bell for the first time since 2018.
Week Six - Georgia Tech (Saturday) - Away
Duke hasn't beaten Georgia Tech since way back in 2019, two coaches ago for the Blue Devils and one for the Yellow Jackets. Manny Diaz's group will be fresh off a rivalry matchup with UNC the week before, but heading in to a bye the following when they face off against Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
Week Eight - Florida State - 10/18 (Friday night) - Home
The Blue Devils' first matchup against a ranked opponent will come after their first bye, as they welcome the preseason ranked #10 Florida State Seminoles in a highly anticipated Friday night battle. FSU narrowly missed the College Football Playoff last year, but they're projected to win the conferencefor the second year in a row in 2024.
Week Nine - SMU - 10/26 (Saturday) - Home
ACC newcomer SMU did not finish in the Top 25 in the preseason AP media poll, but come in just outside at #29. Duke OC Jonathan Brewer is familiar with his former boss, Rhett Lashlee, and the Mustangs who visit Durham just before Halloween. It's the second offive games down the stretch of the 2024 season against teams receiving votes in the preseason poll for Manny Diaz's group, and comes just before a trip to Miami the following weekend.
Week Ten - Miami - 11/2 (Saturday) - Away
There's no doubt that Manny Diaz will be looking for revenge against Miami, who unceremoniously fired him after just two seasons. The Hurricanes are ranked #19 in the preseason AP media poll, and have found themselves ranked before playing a game in three of the last four years. They havenot finished a season ranked in the Top 25since Diaz' first year as head coach, in 2020.
Week Eleven - NC State - 11/9 (Saturday) - Away
The brutal stretch of games through mid-October to mid-November continues as Duke makes the short trip down the road to Raleigh to take on the 24th-ranked NC State Wolfpack in Week Eleven. The Blue Devils have won three of four against their in-state foes, going all the way back to 2009, which was the last victory in Raleigh when David Cutcliffe and Thad Lewis engineered a thrilling win over Russell Wilson and the Wolfpack.
Week Thirteen - Virginia Tech - 11/23 (Saturday) - Home
While Virginia Tech didn't earn enough votes to settle in to the AP Top 25, they were picked as the #27 team in the nation according to registered media votes. Preseason hype abounds for the Hokies, who fell to the Blue Devils last year in Durham 24-7. Duke hosts VT again this year, looking to put together their first two-game winning streak in the series since all the way back in 1951.
Week Fourteen - Wake Forest - 11/30 (Saturday) - Away
The regular season finale will be on the road, facing off against in-state foe Wake Forest. Duke has won the last two games against the Demon Deacons, but their last road victory was in 2017 so they're hoping to change the tide in Winston Salem.
